Another Crocheted Bag

This one is for my niece Emily, she is the older (by minutes) fraternal twin sister of my niece Laura for whom I made the bag I posted about here. But this time I did a mesh stitch and used Lily's Sugar and Cream color called Over the Rainbow! I used the free pattern that came with the ball of yarn.

I could not figure out the instructions for the handle, so I did my own thing with that. It is triple crochet. I thought that stitch would go best with the mesh, and I made it long enough so that it should not be in the way when filling the bag.

I have really enjoyed making this for my niece and thought of her and my mom as I was making the bag. Which is one of the joys of making things for people, I think of them while I am stitching or crafting, or whatever.

I love the mesh look and yarn so much I am making a scarf for myself and will post about that another time.

SNOW!! Plus a bit of stitching.

This weekend, mostly Sunday we had SNOW! Final total here 10.5 inches plus snow drifts in places 16 to 24 inches. The snow was up to Miss Maddie's chest in places which made it tricky for her to do her business, but she managed!

This is early on in the storm, right now all this area is covered by snow with some 16 inch drifts!

This our our back door this am. You can see where I trampled the snow to get the snow measurements and how much it drifted by the patio furniture.

Those deep areas near the bottom of the photo are the 16 in snow drifts Maddie and I had to get through to do our business, which of course she decided to do in one of the deeper areas of the yard! I had to find an area without drifts to do my measuring, but I need taller boots!!!

I planned ahead and did my grocery shopping on Saturday which left Sunday free to "play" in my studio, get some miscellaneous stuff done around the house, bake, and of course STITCH!!!

Here is a little bit of what I worked on.

The cross stitch is a Lizzie Kate Snippet called "Hop Squared" copyright 2008 that I picked up this past Saturday on one of my "get it done before is snows" stops. I also stopped at JoAnn Fabrics, Hobbly Lobby and the grocery store....you see my priorities here!

This needlepoint is what I planned to work on, but did not. It is a freebie from the DMC-USA website that my night ANG group is doing as our February Chapter Project. We started it in February and will get ideas on finishing it at our March program. It calls for Satin Floss and Memory Thread, but I am using regular floss and the Memory Thread, I did not feel like messing with the slippery satin stuff!

I decided not to drive into work today on the slippery roads. The boss let me take annual leave, so we will see what trouble I can get in around the house today!!

Creative Pay It Forward, 2013

A while back I posted about doing a Creative Pay It Forward, but must not have been very clear with the instructions because only one person followed them! I did get the proper response on facebook, but not so much here in blogland. I may try this again later in the year and try for better instructions on my part.

I have not sent this person the random, anytime handmade item yet, but she decided to send me something! What a fun surprise for Valentine's Day.

Here is what Peggy Lee of Kentucky Sampler sent.

A cute lunch bag size Valentine paper bag.

Inside this bag was this adorable old fashioned Valentine's Day Card.

AND wrapped in cute heart tissue paper:

Was this cute hand painted heart shaped box:

But there's more!!! Inside the box was a surprise:
Yummy candy kisses and a pretty dusty rose color skein of DMC floss!!

This was a very pleasant surprise in my mailbox!! Thanks Peggy Lee :)

Monday Quote

It is a Federal Holiday here in the United States - President's Day. Officially it is Washington's birthday, our first President since his birthday is in February. At some point they changed it to President's Day since Abraham Lincoln was also born in February and so the third Monday is February is so designated. Because of this I will give you two quotes today, one from each President.

First from George Washington:
“If Freedom of speech is taken away then dumb and silent we may be led, like sheep to the slaughter.”

Now from Abraham Lincoln:

“How many legs does a dog have if you call the tail a leg? Four. Calling a tail a leg doesn’t make it a leg”

Paperless Grocery Bag

I made this pattern from Coats and Clark.com for my niece, Laura. I did not use the recommended yarn, I used a Lily brand sugar n cream called lime stripes. I loved the colors as it came out and it was fun to make. The added joy of making this for her was that I thought of her while making in and I thought of my mom too (she crocheted with steel needles and fine thread).

I made this for her birthday which is in August and not knowing how long it would take me, I started it in December. Well, I had so much fun I finished it! So rather than wait until August, I decided to send it now. I did not keep track of the time it took, and guess around 30 hours.

Here is a link to the pattern if you want to make one for yourself. It is made in three parts and then stitched together and then the handles sewed on.

Now, what shall I make next?????

Broomstick Lace (aka Jiffy Lace) Scarf

When last we met on this subject I was on the search of more yarn to make this project longer. Well I lucked out and found some!!! It is a about 5 inches wide and curls up into a sort of tube, which I think wears well around the neck. It hangs to my waist and is great fun to wear.

Close up of the lace part.
I used Sugar and Cream cotton yarn by Lily in the color creamsicle since it was a practice piece I went with the cotton I had on hand. Maybe not as elegant as some soft wool or other yarn, but I enjoyed it and am wearing it at work today.

I have been on a crochet binge and my ort jar has zero needlework orts, but lots of yarn bits! We will see how it looks on Sunday with the new moon.
